BELEM, Brazil (Reuters) -Brazil hosts world leaders for a summit on Thursday ahead of the COP30 climate conference in the rainforest city of Belem.
Here’s what the leaders are saying:
U.N. SECRETARY-GENERAL ANTONIO GUTERRES
“We can choose to lead, or be led to ruin.”
“Too many corporations are making record profits from climate devastation, with billions spent on lobbying, deceiving the public and obstructing progress, and too many leaders remain captive to these entrenched interests.”
BRAZILIAN PRESIDENT LUIZ INACIO LULA DA SILVA
“We need a roadmap to plan a just way to undo deforestation, overcome fossil fuels and mobilize the resources needed for those aims.”
“Extremist forces invent untruths for electoral gains and imprison future generations in an outdated model that perpetuates social and economic disparities and environmental degradation.”
CHINA VICE PREMIER DING XUEXIANG, VIA TRANSLATOR
“It is imperative for all parties to uphold true multilateralism, strengthen solidarity and coordination and make sustained progress in global climate governance.
“We need to strengthen international collaboration on green technology and industry, remove trade barriers and ensure the free flow of quality green products to better meet the needs of global sustainable development.”
BRITAIN’S PRINCE WILLIAM
“We come together today, here in the heart of the Amazon at a pivotal moment in human history, a moment that demands courage, cooperation and unwavering commitment to our planet’s future, a future that belongs not to us, but to our children and grandchildren.
“All of us here today understand that we are edging dangerously close to the Earth’s critical tipping points, thresholds beyond which the natural systems we depend on may begin to unravel.”
CHILE’S PRESIDENT GABRIEL BORIC, VIA TRANSLATOR
“These are times in which voices are rising that are deciding to ignore or deny the scientific evidence on the climate crisis.
“The President of the United States at the last U.N. Assembly said that the climate crisis does not exist, and that is a lie.”
