Minnehaha County, SD (KELO.com) — Technology companies are eyeing South Dakota as a possible site for large data centers for Artificial Intelligence. Those centers feed on massive amounts of electricity, often consuming as much power as a small city. There are concerns about the impact that could have on electric rates. Public Utilities Commission Chair Chris Nelson says those companies share some of the same concerns as the PUC. Data Centers are being considered in Deuel, McPherson and Minnehaha Counties.
