The Sioux Falls City Council has voted to spend an extra 900-thousand dollars on new police radios which takes advantage of price slashing on the new technology. The council voted 6-1 to spend the money through a special appropriation. This move didn’t sit well with Councilor Curt Soehl. Police Chief Jon Thum says the new technology is needed to overcome dead spots in key areas like schools and hospitals. Even though the money wasn’t in the 2026 budget or the five-year capital spending plan. Chief Thum says the move puts city police radios on par with the state radio system.
