PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — Governor Larry Rhoden is signing the largest property tax relief package in South Dakota history. It’s the product of some heated arguments, a lot of hard work, and included a compromise with one of his competitors in this year’s race for Governor. That compromise started with an early morning phone call Rhoden placed to Republican leaders in the state House. That conversation led to the compromise that resulted in the two major property tax relief bills passed by the legislature. The Governor said, “It was encouraging to me, because I thought that’s what this process should be able to look like.”
Fellow gubernatorial candidate, Speaker Jon Hansen, was in on the compromise. At the GOP’s final legislative news conference of the ’26 session, Hansen said, “I couldn’t be more grateful for everybody who was willing to come to the table and deliver a couple of bills that I think are really going to bring about significant and lasting property tax relief.” The main run of the 2026 Legislative session drew to a close Thursday.
