March 2 (Reuters) – A United Airlines flight made an emergency landing on Monday shortly after departing Los Angeles after suffering a possible engine fire, forcing passengers on the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner to exit by slides on a taxiway, the Federal Aviation Administration and airline said.
The FAA said United Airlines Flight 2127 – which was bound for Newark Liberty International Airport – returned safely to Los Angeles around 2:20 p.m. ET (1920 GMT).
The FAA briefly issued a ground stop at Los Angeles as a result of the incident and after lifting it said there would be continuing arrival delays of up to 30 minutes due to the incident.
Video posted showed crews hosing off its left engine and other videos posted on social media showed smoke coming from the engine and passengers exiting the airplane via slides.
United said the airplane suffered a possible engine fire. Passengers were bused to the terminal, adding that there were no reported injuries. There were 256 passengers and 12 crew on board.
Boeing did not immediately comment.
