SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — The Sioux Falls City Council has given its stamp of approval of an eight million dollar Tax Increment Financing District for a downtown development project. The move advances the $95-million Railyard development. The council also took the first step in accepting a land donation just east of Falls Park that will become an extension of the park. The Greg and Sherry Carmon family is offering to donate just over an acre of land on the south side of a quarry just east of Falls Park. Councilors approved the move, after Councilor Kurt Soehl pushed for an environmental check for possible contaminants. He told fellow council members, “I’m extremely worried about taking an “as is” property that has been industrial for 100 years. I’m concerned about that.”
A final vote on accepting the land donation will be held in May. In the meantime, Parks Department officials will research the possibility of conducting environmental tests on the soil.
