Sep 11 (Field Level Media) – Right-handed pitcher Braxton Ashcraft has right arm discomfort, and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent him to the 15-day injured list on Thursday.
The Pirates recalled right-hander Antwone Kelly from Triple-A in a corresponding move.
Ashcraft has enjoyed an All-Star season, making his first career Midsummer Classic in July. The 26-year-old has compiled a 14-6 record and 3.65 ERA over 28 starts in his second major league season.
In his most recent start on Sept. 5, Ashcraft took the loss after surrendering three runs on seven hits. Those were the highest totals surrendered in each category over his last five starts.
“It was after that last start that it really jumped up,” Pirates manager Don Kelly said. “I think as we sit here right now, it does not appear to be anything structural.
“Still going through some tests to determine exactly what’s going on, but just unfortunately, he’s going to have to go on the IL.”
Kelly, 23, sports a 5.40 ERA over four appearances (no starts) in his first MLB season.
