WASHINGTON, Aug 23 (Reuters) – Andretti Global’s Kyle Kirkwood won the inaugural Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington on Sunday after an IndyCar race disrupted by six yellow flags, cutting into championship leader Alex Palou’s advantage.
Arrow McLaren’s Christian Lundgaard finished second and Kirkwood’s Andretti teammate Will Power completed the podium.
Palou, of Chip Ganassi Racing, entered the race with six wins this season and a 133-point lead over Kirkwood. The four-times champion’s afternoon was undermined by a drive-through penalty, a slow pit stop and a late crash.
The first IndyCar race on Washington’s streets began after President Donald Trump completed a ceremonial lap in the presidential limousine and waved the green flag.
