On Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2026, at approximately 2:32 p.m., the City of Brookings Police Department received a 911 call reporting a vehicle versus bicyclist injury accident at the intersection of Medary Avenue South and Fifth Street South.
The preliminary investigation indicates that a 6-year-old female was traveling eastbound on the south sidewalk of Fifth Street South through the intersection at Medary Avenue on a bicycle. At the same time, an 18-year-old male was operating a green 2002 Chevy Silverado 2500 pickup truck bearing South Dakota registration westbound on Fifth Street South making a left turn to travel southbound on Medary Avenue.
The driver of the vehicle observed the bicyclist enter the crosswalk and took evasive action by swerving to the left in an attempt to avoid her. The bicyclist struck the rear passenger side of the vehicle in the middle of the intersection.
Brookings Ambulance transported the bicyclist to Brookings Hospital where she was later flown to Sioux Falls for advanced treatment. The investigation indicates that the bicyclist may have suffered injuries to her lower extremities.
The investigation is ongoing.
