SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — The financial picture for the city of Sioux falls is getting brighter, defying national trends. Consumer sentiment nationally is at its lowest point since the 1950’s. Despite that, City Finance Director Shawn Pritchett says sales tax revenues are on the upswing in Sioux Falls. “The Year to Date annual growth in sales tax through April 2026 is at 6.6%.”
That is welcome news as the budget season approaches. Formulating the 2027 budget will be challenging with a new mayor and at least two new members on the Council. Officials will also have to deal with the impact of a law passed by the 2025 legislature that limits annual increases in property tax revenue to three percent per year. Pritchett says his department is still working to identify ten-million dollars in ongoing expenses that can be trimmed to maintain adequate budget reserves going forward. So far, they have found half that amount.
